The Queen's Diamond Jubilee Picnic & Ceilidh

1 June 2012

Over 70 members attended a Picnic and Ceilidh at the newly opened St Abbs Community Centre on the evening of 1 June 2012 to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

The Community Centre was ideal and the people of St Abbs should be congratulated for creating such a fine venue from the old school building.  Special thanks to the ladies who run the cafe at the centre who were most helpful in helping to set up the venue for both the picnic and the ceilidh as well as instructing the helpers on how to operate the kitchen equipment and where to find tables, chairs etc.

After a cold and wet week the organisers were rightly worried about the weather.  They should not have worried.  On cue  the sun came out at 4.00pm and provided a wonderfully warm, sunny evening ideal for the Bring Your Own picnic.  Red, White and Blue were the order of the day from table cloths, napkins, flower arrangements, balloons, hats and dress.

In the evening we were entertained by the Ewan Galloway Duo who provided an excellent variety of Scottish Country Dance music.  Everybody participated in what was probably the longest raffle on record with most if not all winning some sort of prize.  We even had a couple of holiday makers from Oxford join in the fun and dancing.  They will certainly take back happy memories of the EBU3A and the hospitality shown to them by all.

The whole evening was a great success thanks largely to the sterling work put in by the organisers Kath, Catriona and Cath and helpers Maria, Linda, Duncan and Mel but more important by the attendees entering into the whole spirit of this Diamond Jubilee event.
